Unveiling Frank Wild’s portrait

Ten years ago very few people outside the polar community had heard of one of the greatest polar explorers of the Heroic Age, Frank Wild. Today, thanks to my research over eight years, the book, The Quest for Frank Wild and a BBC Two one hour program based on the great man, he has been brought out of the shadows. Finding his remains in a vault in Johannesburg and taking them back to Grytviken to be buried alongside the ‘Boss’ – his beloved Boss – ensures that the thousands of people that visit Shackleton’s grave each year have the opportunity to pay their respects to both these extraordinary men.

And so this month we will be back to South Georgia doing just that on a third Shackleton Centenary voyage. A commemoration that will include a traverse of South Georgia by nine hardy and adventurous souls.

To date I have attended three plaque ceremonies for Frank Wild. The most recent was the Blue Plaque set up on the school house in Eversholt, Bedforshire, where his father was school master and where Frank would return after his many expeditions. Four years ago, first day cover stamps were issued by the Falklands government, commemorating Frank.

Married to a figurative Royal Academician sculptor, James Butler I was always hopeful that he would have the opportunity to make a bronze portrait figure of Frank. This is a costly business. However, the locals of Skelton, the north Yorkshire town, where Frank was born, managed to get permission for a portrait of the explorer to be erected. The sculptor is William Harling and the portrait in the much more affordable medium, resin, was recently unveiled.

How satisfying it is to know that the only man to have gone to Antarctica on five expeditions, who was Shackleton’s right hand man and who was eventually lost in life and in death is now back in the annals of polar history. So richly deserved.

And the story of ashes continues. On November 30th, 2017 Ice Tracks will be returning to Grytviken with the ashes of one of the greatest modern day polar explorers, Henry Worsley. Henry a close friend of Ice Tracks was our historian on the inaugural Shackleton Centenary Voyage. It was only last year in the Whaler’s church as he was slogging his way across Antarctica, we prayed for his safe return. It was not to be. Working closely with his family and the Falklands government we have the privilege of bringing his remains back to his beloved Shackleton buried in the Whaler’s cemetery, a man he so admired and a place that he loved.
